ANCOSOS 2024 on AI: If you're not well informed, you will be shamefully deformed - Don asserts
In a grand display of academic excellence and innovation, the Annual National Conference of the School of Science (ANCOSOS 2024) officially commenced on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at the prestigious Obong Lecture Theatre in Adeyemi Federal University of Education Ondo. The theme for the year’s conference is “Breaking Boundaries and Extending the Frontiers of Science and Science Education through Artificial Intelligence for a Brighter Future”.
The distinguished Prof. Michael Awodiran of the Department of Zoology, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, graced the occasion as the Keynote Address Presenter, bringing his wealth of knowledge and experience to shed light on the conference theme. Dr. Kehinde Emmanuel Adenegan, a renowned figure in the field of Mathematics and ICT and the anchor of Yoruba Mathematics Class on YouTube, took on the role of Lead Paper Presenter, captivating the audience with insightful perspectives on advancing science and science education.
"If you are not well informed you will be well and shamefully deformed!", was a statement asserted by a versatile ICT guru and the Acting Rector of Adeyemi College of Technology Ondo, Dr. Kehinde Adenegan when he delivered his presentation.
In Adenegan's presentation on "Breaking Boundaries and Extending the Frontiers of Science and Science Education thru AI", he relayed a life story of his experience in 2012 at a fully automated hotel in London Heatrow where he was lodged. He disclosed that being his first experience in such an environment with such facilities, he couldn't open the room's door and even the light, unknown to him that the card given to him was the one to perform the miracles he was looking for in the room until it was exposed to him by the receptionist. "You cannot grow above the information you have! Hence, seek information, seek knowledge to grow in this dispensation", Adenegan advised.
Meanwhile, Dr. Kelvin Meyeyin, a well traveled technocrat, medical practitioner, seasoned publisher and a distinguished Rotarian, assumed the pivotal role of chairing the ceremony, ensuring its smooth flow and success. While delivering his address in his capacity as the Chairman, he advised that position papers and curriculum on AI should be generated by the conference. "AI is what we cannot avoid today, hence we must all be ready to key into this technological advancement", Meyeyin concluded.
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) was skillfully led by Dr. Raphael Adenodi, who orchestrated a seamless event from start to finish. Dr. Rafiu Sanni, as the host Dean, welcomed participants warmly and set the tone for an intellectually stimulating gathering.
In the words of the Keynote address Presenter, Prof. Michael Awodiran, he posited that there are many challenges AI has brought today. He noted, job displacement, ethical issues and considerations, data privacy and even cost affordability. "Despite all these, there are inherent opportunities which we can't discard about AI, we must use and deploy it in researches, daily life and the like if we must grow with scientific trends", Awodiran maintained.
The Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Adeyemi Federal University of Education Ondo, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, graced the event as the esteemed Chief Host, underscoring the university’s commitment to fostering academic discourse and advancement in science education. He was ably represented by . Akinyemi Olufunminiyi Akinbobola, the Dean Faculty of Education and Chairman of Deans and Directors of the University.
Dignitaries from various Faculties of the institution were also in attendance to partake in this celebration of knowledge sharing and collaboration. Also present were the Immediate Past Ondo State Surveyor General and Permanent Secretary, Surv. Ch. Abiodun Adigun who led Rotarians from Ondo State to the event as the Rotarians presence added glamour to the event, Rot. Abiola Olaitan President Rotary Club of Adeyemi, Dr. Tope Oziegbe, Dr. Toju Eyengho, Dr. Michael Ogunboyede, Dr. Anthonia Loto, Dr. Matthew Oluwafemi Lawal, Dr. Folorunso Balogun, Dr.Rogers Akinsokeji, Dr. Adebayo Ganiyu, Dr. Marcellina Fatoba, PP Elizabeth Okoroafor, Mrs. Temidayo representing the Messiah church, and host of others whose names are just too numerous to be listed.
Recognizing the importance of inclusivity and accessibility, ANCOSOS 2024 was live-streamed by AGES and the Yoruba Mathematics Class YouTube channels to reach a global audience beyond those physically present at the venue. This technological integration allowed for remote participation and engagement with the thought-provoking discussions unfolding during the conference.
The official opening ceremony of ANCOSOS 2024 at Adeyemi Federal University of Education Ondo marked a significant milestone in promoting scientific inquiry and educational advancement.
