Write your own history now! VC tasks varsity staff
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, Prof. Taiwo Asaolu, has advised staff of Nigerian Universities to start writing their own history as they progress on their jobs. The erudite scholar and astute administrator handed over the advice to his staff and as well as Nigerian varsity staff in general during a just concluded staff advisors workshop. The workshop was anchored by Better Tomorrow Training Consult (BTTC).
Prof. Asaolu, at the three-day knowledge-packed and memorable workshop held at the University of Ilesa, Ilesa in Osun State between 27th and 29th November 2023 with the theme "sustainable student advisory process as a veritable tool for viable university education, maintained that each staff will get his or her report card in later years of whatever activities done while in the university service.
Asaolu further argued that both staff and students are vulnerable, though the level of vulnerability may differ. He disclosed this while giving his explosive talk at the workshop titled "Support Systems and Meeting the Needs of Vulnerable Students".
The dynamic and well-experienced vice-chancellor gave inspiring and outstanding testimonies of some of his experiences in the decades of teaching and researches in the four-wall of the Nigerian classrooms and how that have translated into opportunities, influence, greatness, and impacts into his personal and academic life in all ramifications of life, both at home and abroad.
In his own words, the keynote address speaker, Professor Oyesoji Aremu, emphasized the need for a sustainable staff advisory roles in Nigerian Universities for better image making, productivity and sustainability. Aremu, a versatile university Don, experienced counselling psychologist and an expert in criminal Justice, encouraged staff at all levels to take advisory roles with great importance. "You should not look down on any student as every student is a potential leader of tomorrow", Aremu warned. While lamenting on some lecturers whose attributes are to frustrate students or make themselves semi gods in the university, he advised staff to maintain good and professional relationship with students to bring out the best in the students.
Earlier in his opening address, the principal facilitator and training consultant, Prof. Taiwo Adenegan, who is the Head of Education programmes and Director of academic planning at the prestigious Achievers University Owo, laid bare his experiences as a one-time Dean of students affairs of AUO, to advise the participants on how best to relate with students. "Please appreciate the university management for organizing this type of rare workshop and take good advantage of it to optimally bring out the best in you as your university takes off in a grand style under the leadership of a visionary VC", Prof. Adenegan remarked.
Meanwhile, in his welcome speech during the official opening of the workshop, the Vice Chancellor, ably represented by Dr. Rahman Adewale Abdul-Azeez, the Dean of Faculty of Law, encouraged the staff to take the workshop serious as staff-students advisory roles should be effectively handled in this century if Nigerian Universities must make impacts.
Other facilitators at the dynamic workshop were Prof. Jude and Dr. Abiola Akingbemisilu both from Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba who respectively addressed sustainable advisory roles and communication in advisory roles, as well as adolescence and students roles/positions in the process. Others include Dr. Kehinde Adenegan, the Acting Rector of Adeyemi College of Technology Ondo who spoke on maximizing technology for impactful students advisory roles, Dr. Mrs. Abidemi Oni, lecturer and Achievers University Guidance Counsellor, who addressed students who engage in social vices.
The most engaging part of the workshop was the group presentation aspect. The participants who were drawn from both teaching and non-teaching staff categories were divided into six groups and respectively presented by the group.
During the closing session, gifts and cash awards as motivation were given to best groups and individuals which were presented by the representative of the Vice Chancellor, the Faculty of Law Dean, Dr. Rahman Adewale Abdul-Azeez. Equally, all the participants received certificates of participation. The principal facilitator, Prof. Taiwo Adenegan remarked, "this won't be the end of the workshop, a follow-up process will be ensured and I will be extremely happy that you all make good use of the knowledge impacted into you"
