Effective parenting is a catalyst in building a new Nigeria, University Don asserts
At the 1st session of the 24th synod of the Diocese of Ondo Anglican Communion, held at St. Andrews Anglican church Idimoge between 27th and 30th April 2023, a renowned Ekiti State University Professor of Chemistry and the founder of children in science and technology (CIST), Professor Mrs. Ibiyinka Ogunlade has delivered a very inspiring and timely talk on effective parenting which she termed as a catalyst in building a new in Nigeria.
In her introduction, she revealed that righteousness makes a nation and sin is a reproach to any nation. Making a reference to 2nd Chronicles 7:14, the implication of this is that the new Nigeria can be built the new Nigeria is time to be the time here in now which is the 21st century it is a peculiar time characterized by white children that have redefined parenting to be delicate challenging rotational confusing and complex stop.
She gave the basis for Genesis of parenting and the concept of parents. "Two stages of parenting exit. Image-making, nursery, authoritative interpretive, interdependent, and departure are key factors. Positive parenting skills which include encouragement, responsiveness, setting good examples, setting positive boundaries, and sensitivity and interaction through body language and eye contact are ways of effective parenting", Ogunlade explained!
Furthermore, Ogunlade identified co-parenting, single parenting, adopted parents, foster care and kinship as types of parenting. She then highlighted authoritative, authoritarian, attachment, permissive, fury or gentle parenting, helicopter, bulldozer involved or negative as approaches to parenting styles. She x-rayed A to z alphabets of parenting which are so explosive and eye-opening. Four C's parenting words were given by Ogunlade as care, consistency, choices and consequences which parents must be familiar with.
Conclusively, the children expert Ibiyinka Ogunlade highlighted that parenting skills in a digital age involves parents to be familiar with what the children are doing on their device and monitor them to be teachable while their children take them through the digital life, priority should be given to what is important for the family health and well-being. She advised parents to create and make a plan with their family and should be mindful with how they interact with personal devices and putting their children into consideration in the use of cell phones. She further pointed out that the children science clinic which she oversees has a philosophy to assist in effective parenting to catalyze the building of a new Nigeria.
Meanwhile, another renowned Professor and an astute administrator, Prof. Olusegun Fatusi, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Medical Science, Ondo equally delivered a health talk on low sugar called hypoglycemia. The medical expert who was represented by Dr. O. A. Adejumo, advised Nigerians to take their health seriously by regular check up and prevention of the deadly ailment which, if in one's body may not be quickly discovered until it grows beyond mild to a severe condition which may take one's life.
The session of the health talk and parenting aspects was chaired by a seasoned jurist, renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and a devout christian, Mr. Ayodele Akintunde. In his closing remark, Akintunde admonished the synod to take the two topics very seriously and work on rebuilding the old waste of Nigeria through an effective parenting.
The program was attended by Justice Taiwo Obayemi Taiwo, Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Adeniran Oni (Lord Bishop of Ondo Diocese), Ch. & Mrs. Steve Akinretoye, the Baba Ijo and Iya Ewe of the Cathedral church of St. Stephen, Ondo, Sir. Ayo Akingbule, Dr. Jibayo Oyebade, other Diocesan dignitaries, synod delegates, among others.
