Farewell to a Legend: Ch. Joseph Oludapo laid to rest

The burial of Chief Joseph Oludepo Oludapo, a revered nonagenarian, took place on July 1st and 2nd, 2025, at Ifetedo, Ondo State. The solemn occasion drew together family, friends, and community leaders to pay their last respects to a life well-lived.

On Tuesday, July 1st, 2025, a wake-keep was held at St. Peters Anglican Church Ifetedo, where friends and family gathered to share memories and pay tribute to the deceased chief. The wake-keep was a poignant reminder of the impact Chief Oludapo had on those who knew him.

The funeral service, held on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025, was officiated by Ven. Olajide Oni, Vicar of St. Peters Anglican Church Ifetedo with other priests. In his sermon, Ven. Oni reflected on the life of Chief Oludapo, describing him as a man of great character and faith. "We thank God for the life of Chief Joseph Oludepo Oludapo, a man who lived a life of purpose and service to others," Ven. Oni said. "His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, and we take comfort in the memories we shared with him."

The Vicar also drew inspiration from the scriptures, highlighting God's mercy and compassion. "The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and of great mercy," Ven. Oni quoted. "We entrust Chief Oludapo's soul to our merciful God, knowing that he will rest in peace." His eldest son, Mr. Olukayode Oludepo was prayed for after the service to be the family representative and ambassador in matters that concern the church as the family also promised to ensure their father's place is not vacant despite his voyage to the world beyond.

Following the funeral service, the remains of Chief Oludapo was laid to rest at the church cemetery. A reception was later held at Roberts Ware Event Center in Ondo City, where friends and family gathered to share joyful moments, memories, stories and celebrate the chief's life. Guests were treated to assorted drinks and foods with classic treatments.

The funeral was just another one in town and a talk of the town where guests were given various gifts which even included packed raw foods-rice and garri specially packaged in a sealed nylon labeled in the name of the celebrated Chief Joseph Oludapo. With this generous gesture, the family recognized the state of the nation and the needs in this austere period by identifying with the needs of people as they celebrated the glorious exit of their father.

The children took turns to "exchange their feet" on the dancing floor to melodious music provided by two classical bands brought to the event hall and another cultural geoup. The children and inlaws also paid special tributes to their late father. These include: Mr. Olukayode Oludapo, Mrs. Olukemi Okohue, Oluwole Oludapo, Olukunle Oludapo, with the in-laws: Engr. Patrick Okohue, Dr. Mrs. Ronke Oludapo and many grandchildren.

Throughout the funeral proceedings, the community came together to bid farewell to a beloved leader and friend. Chief Oludapo's legacy will be remembered for generations to come, and his impact on the lives of those who knew him will never be forgotten.

Meanwhile, AGES correspondence spoke with few guests at the occasion among whom were Ch.& Mrs. Festus Oriade, the Bobagunwa of Epeland. In the words of the Bobagunwa, he described the event as a remarkable one which every child will desire to have such a befitting exit program for their aged ones when they go to the world beyond. He lauded the concerted efforts of the children of Pa Joseph for organizing such epoch making funeral for their father.
