Archbishop tasks Nigerians to change their hope and focus
Amidst the daunting economic and security challenges plaguing Nigeria, an Archbishop in the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion has called upon Nigerians to shift their hope and attention from man to God - their Creator.
The Most Rev'd. Dr. Simon Oluwole Borokini, the Archbishop of Ondo province handed this advice to Nigerians during his opening sermon at the 41st Ondo Ecclesiastical Provincial Council Meeting convened at the Diocese of Akure from February 12 to 13, 2024, at the esteemed St. David Cathedral. The theme of this significant gathering was “Look unto me and be saved, Is.45:22” reflecting a message of hope and salvation for all attendees.
The Archbishop, Most Rev'd. Dr. Simeon Oluwole Borokini, delivered a sermon during the council meeting. His message resonated with the audience, emphasizing the importance of faith, redemption, and looking to a higher power for salvation.
Archbishop Borokini’s words inspired reflection and introspection among those present, urging them to seek spiritual renewal and guidance in their lives. He emphatically stressed, "Nigerians need a shift of focus and attention at this critical stage of our dear nation where our hope in men have been completely dashed". He ended his message with a popular Yorùbá song, "Ìlú le koko ò, Olúwa wá sò'lú dèrò".
Throughout the council meeting, various important discussions took place regarding the state of the church, community outreach initiatives, and ways to strengthen faith-based practices within the province. Attendees engaged in fruitful dialogues, sharing insights and experiences that aimed to foster unity and growth within the ecclesiastical community.
Several resolutions were reached during the meeting, focusing on enhancing collaboration among dioceses, promoting social justice initiatives, and expanding educational programs to empower youth and vulnerable populations. The council members demonstrated a commitment to serving their congregations with compassion and dedication, embodying the values of love, service, and inclusivity.
As the 41st Ondo Ecclesiastical Provincial Council Meeting drew to a close, Archbishop Borokini delivered closing remarks that encapsulated the spirit of unity and purpose that permeated the gathering. He expressed gratitude for all participants’ contributions and encouraged them to carry forward the message of hope and salvation in their respective communities.
Looking ahead, the ecclesiastical province is poised to embark on new initiatives and projects that will further advance its mission of spreading faith, love, and compassion throughout Ondo State. The council meeting served as a catalyst for positive change and renewal within the church, setting a strong foundation for future endeavors.
Present at the council meeting were the Bishops of Anglican Dioceses across Ondo and Ekiti states an their amiable wives, the treasurers of the respective Dioceses, the women representatives, he Clergymen and members of the women organizations. Also, notable members, bot men and women, of the host Diocese were present at the opening service.
Meanwhile the women organizations and women from Akure Archdeaconry presented indigenous songs and music to welcome members to the provincial board meeting. In particular, prayers were offered for Nigeria during the second day mattins service.
On the second day of the provincial council meeting, the Ven. Dr. Stephen Fagbemi was invited to present a timely paper on stress management. The cleric who is also a medical professional took his time to explain what stress is, types of stress and causes of stress. He identified 4 As as a strategic way of managing stress; Avoid, Alter, Adjust and Adapt. The cleric enjoined members of the board and Nigerians to take care of their health and manage stress at this particular point in time to avoid unnecessary health breakdown. "Stress is part of us in almost every area of our sector, but we have the power on our own to avoid or manage as the case may be", Fagbemi added.
Corroborating his address were the Bishops of Irele Eseodo and Ondo Dioceses, Rt. Rev. Oyinlola and Rt. Revd. Dr. Stephen Adeniran Oni who applauded the speaker and maintained that church leaders need to identify their sources of stress and manage effectively if it cannot be avoided.
