Don’t mortgage your future with drugs and illicit affairs! Expert warns

An expert in youth and adolescence has given a stern warning to young ladies not to mortgage their future with drugs and illicit affairs in this sophisticated age. She gave this warning at the opening session of a three-day camp organized by the Women’s Guild/Mother’s Union of the Anglican Diocese of Ondo held at the Diocesan Comprehensive College Ondo (DICCO) on Friday, 19th August 2022.

Olagbuji, a public health physician, counsellor, public speaker and medical director in the Ondo State Ministry of health, advised the young ladies who turned out in their number from Ondo city and its metropolis within the Diocese to shun social vices, and embrace a good relationship with God, even as the world is turning upside down in this technological age.

Speaking on globalization, sexuality and its implications on the female gender, Yetunde Olagbuji tasked the ladies to be conscious of themselves while navigating the adolescent stage. “Puberty stage comes with its challenges and as ladies, you need to be aware and be properly educated so that you will not be misled”, Olagbuji added. She took time to explain sexuality issues to the young girls who often fall prey of sexual crimes and vices in the society today.

Dr. Olagbuji did not fail to create the awareness of the prevailing drug abuse in the society today. She noted that many youths have short-lived their dreams as a result of drug abuse. “Don't try to be involved in drugs because the consequences are never palatable and to rehabilitate drug addicts is not easily come by”, the medical doctor warned!. She described how extremely dangerous drugs and illicit affairs can be. She discouraged young girls not to listen to people who try to share the seemingly advantages of such acts.

Meanwhile, the adolescent expert added, “if you do not make yourself relevant with ICT knowledge in this 21^st century, you will not be employable”. She advised the ladies to upgrade themselves and improve on their ICT skills for them to get good jobs in their chosen careers. “Don’t say you did not study computer, so you really don’t need computer as such. Note that you are not employable if you can’t use computer in this age”, Olagbuji reiterated.

Olagbuji equally warned the girls not to make so called celebrities their role models as many are living advanced prostitute life for some of the ladies while some of the guys, and even ladies are drug addicts. “Let the word of God be your role model as man is infallible”, Yetunde added. She concluded by sharing her personal experience during her NYSC year where her encounter with a desperate guy was very remarkable (watch the video here). "Your vision will affect your goal and your goal will affect your decision", Yetunde concluded.

In her welcome address, the President of Ondo Diocese Mothers’ Union/Women’s Guild (MU/WG), Mrs. Oyewola Blessing Oni, counselled the young ladies to be looking diligently in line with the camp’s theme taken from Heb. 12:15-17. She welcomed the girls and ladies to the annual event and enjoined them to be of good behavior, make the good of the camp’s opportunity and prepare for their future.

In the same vein, the Lord Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Revd. Dr. Stephen Adeniran Oni, while welcoming the ladies to the Ladies Summit 2022, a summit held concurrently with the camp on Saturday 20th August, advised the ladies to have a clear cut vision of their future. "I don't joke with my home. If you can't take care of your home, you are worst than an infidel! A home is the microcosm of the nation. If your marriage scatters, then there is a problem for the society", the Bishop affirmed! It would be recalled that the summit theme is, "My choice, my destiny!"

Other events held at the Ladies summit and girl's guild camp included talk on interview preparation and attendance, delivered by Dr. Kehinde Adenegan, a former Director in the Management Information System Directorate of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo.

Other programmes, among others were practical session on preparation of nutritional Kunu drink and tiger nut by Mrs. 'Joke Adeleye, wife of the Cathedral Dean; academic seminar, debate and prayer sessions.

The event was attended by the Ondo Diocese priests’ wives, officials of the MU/WG and some of the priests who conducted the opening service. These include, the Revd. Adeniyi, Revd. Alex Akinyotu, and Revd. Canon Adesanya.
