ASUU strike: Fagbemi decries government insensitivity to Nigerian students' plight, asks Governor to look into RUGIPO challenges
The Lord Bishop of Owo Anglican Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Fagbemi, has decried what is described as government insensitivity to great Nigeria students' plight in the way the ongoing ASUU Strike is being handled.
At the Owo Diocesan synod formal opening ceremony, held at the St. Paul Anglican church, Ifon in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State on Friday 22nd July, 2022, Fagbemi remarked, in his episcopal charge, that it is so appalling to see Nigerian youths who are future leaders roaming about the streets sequel to government insensitivity and insincerity to their plights.
"It took the President over three months to publicly react to the strike that his attention has just been called to this!", so observed his Lordship. Then afterwards, the strike is going into its sixth month, and the nation leaders are strongly putting machineries in motion for 2023 general election, leaving out an important issue as this. What a country!, Fagbemi exclaimed in his charge.
In another development, the cleric has also urged the Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, to kindly and swiftly attend to the unpaid salaries and pensions of the staff of the state-owned tertiary institution, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo. "Many of these workers have become beggars and feel grossly inadequate to meet personal and domestic needs of theirs. So long as they are being owed salaries, there will be hunger and no feel good sense in the community", Fagbemi passionately submitted.
Meanwhile, the Bishop lauded the efforts of the government on security matters in the state, especially the establishment and operations of the Amotekun security outfit. He however described as very unfortunate, the dastardly act of killing perpetrated by unscrupulous elements in the country. Fagbemi further appealed to the government to invest more into making Amotekun well-equipped and more suited to deal with these security challenges that are daily starring us in the face.
In his words, the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, ably represented by Mr. Oluwadare Aragbaye, former Ondo State Head of Service, congratulated the Diocesan on the year synod and further strengthened the fact that the state government will not leave any stone unturned in addressing emerging situations in the State.
The year 2022 synod of the Diocese, which was hosted by a former Commissioner in Ondo state, Princess Tola Aworh, the first woman to single handedly host synod in the history of the Diocese, was well attended by well meaning Nigerians, Monarchs, Bishops, other clerics from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), political class, academic world and the like.
In attendance, among others were the Bishop of Ika Diocese, Rt Rev. Godfrey Ekpensi, Rt. Rev. Prof. Obijole, Rev. Dr. Oladapo, Owo local government CAN chairman, Ose Local Government Council Chairman, Chief Imam of Ifon, The Reagent of Ifon, the Olupele of Ipele, Ch.
