Is Nigeria created for these avalanche of presidents?
Is Nigeria created for these avalanche of presidents? This was a timely question asked by a cleric, The Most Revd Prof. George Latunji Lasebikan ( Dean Emeritus, Church of Nigeria) at the just concluded 2022 synod of the Diocese of Ondo, Anglican Communion.
Prof. Lasebikan asked this copious question during the Thanksgiving Service and Closing Ceremony of the first Session of the 24th Synod of the Ondo Diocese held at the Cathedral Church of St. Stephen Oke-Aluko, Ondo city between 5th of May to 8th May.
Casting a cursory looks on the political terrains of Nigeria , Lasebikan explained in what look like the politicians now never feel concerned about people but however console all with Paul's 2nd letter to the Corinthians Chapter 2 verses 3-5 "I ought to rejoice having confidence in you all that my joy is joy of you all". The Retired Archbishop and a Professor at the Ajayi Crowther University bemoaned the situation in the country and urged the people of this nation to pray for selfless leaders who will serve the nation without sentiment, religion bias, nepotism, fear and favour. Speaking in line with the synod theme, approved workman is a leader who has listening ears and will not rule his people by proxy nor rule from a closet without a practical and empathic demonstration of the feeling of pains the citizens are passing through. He further decried the insecurity in the country and the alarming rate it is growing. Are we breeding leaders who will only show up periodically on TVs to just always sympathize with victims of insecurity and government failure.
Bishop Lasebikan who who started his sermon with cheering heart warming courtesies expressed his deep appreciation to his hosts, and the entire people of the Diocese including the Baba Ijo of the Cathedral, Chief Steve Akinretoye whose installation, the cleric described as divine and not a mistake, judging from the great improvement and developments in the Cathedral.
Quoting his text from the Synod theme and text from the second Epistle of Paul to Timothy, Chapter 2 verse 15, Bishop Lasebikan stated that "Approved and Irreproachable workman " should be for every labourer who's should not be ashamed of his or her calling. He remarked that every leader has been called and that everyone will render account of what he has done as a workman!
He did not forget in paying glowing tributes to Retired Archbishops Akinbiyi, Omotunde, and serving Archbishop Egbunu, as well as Retired Bishops Akinlalu , Fasogbon , Fagbamiye and other retired priests present during the service. He prayed that in retirements, they will not be tired .
In the service, Most Revd. Prof Latunji Lasebikan was honoured by the Diocese of Ondo with an episcopal Platinium award of Excellence for his meritorious service to the Diocese while he was the Bishop of Ondo Diocese. This award marks the Platinium anniversary of Ondo Diocese. The award was remarkably presented by the Bishop of the Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Adeniran Oni.
