Owo Diocese holds youths summit, tasks youths on overcoming unemployment in a challenging economy

The Diocese of Owo, Anglican Communion, has charged young people to embrace innovation, skills acquisition, and faith-driven enterprise as tools to overcome unemployment in today’s tough economy.

The charge was given at the Diocesan Youths Pre-Synod Summit held on Saturday, 18 July 2026 at the Chapel of Epiphany, Owo. The summit brought together youths, clergy, and professionals from across the diocese to deliberate on practical pathways to self-reliance. 

Speaking at the event, the representative of the Lord Bishop of Owo, Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Ayodeji Fagbemi (FICT, CFAT), The Ven. Seth Akinro, commended the diocese for prioritizing youth development. He reiterated the bishop’s commitment to raising a generation of godly, skilled, and employable youths who will be assets to the church and society.

The theme of the summit focused on youth empowerment and economic resilience. Delivering the keynote address, an Ondo-born entrepreneur, Mr. Richard Olushoga Akinnusi, urged participants to move beyond certificates and build solutions that address community needs. He emphasized entrepreneurship, digital skills, and discipline as non-negotiable for youths who want to thrive in a challenging economy.

The second paper was presented by a finance expert, Rev. Canon Dr. Charles Awosusi, a lecturer at Adekunle Ajasin University. He broke down personal finance, savings and accountability culture, and investment principles for young people, stressing that financial literacy with self esteem is key to turning small beginnings into sustainable ventures. He encouraged the youths to embrace godliness abd dedication for self reliance. 

A highlight of the program was a very engaging panel discussion anchored by Chief Lawrence Omosanya, a former Federal Character Commissioner, Engr. Sola Milla, and Dr. Mrs. Yinka Jinadu. The panelists shared practical experiences on career building, vocational training, and how faith can guide professional excellence. They tasked youths to network, seek mentorship, and take advantage of opportunities within and outside the church.

The summit was hosted in the Rev. Canon Kasali Dimeji-Akinlami led Chapel of Epiphany of Owo Anglican diocese in the serene avenue of the late sage and Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. 

Meanwhile, Dr. Kehinde Adenegan,  Chairman of the Planning Committee, said the summit was designed to equip youths with both spiritual and practical tools for the future. The program was anchored by the Diocesan Youth Chaplain, Rev. Canon Wale Olakunori, together with Mr. Stephen Ogunleye, an Owo-born entrepreneur.

Also present were the Diocesan Youth President, Ch. Ayokunle Adedeji; former Youth President, Prof. Taiwo Adenegan; and Rev. Solomon Fagade, Ambassador Adeola Ogunbodede, Barr. Mrs. Temitope Oladimeji, among other dignitaries.

The program ended with prayers, networking, and a call to action for youths to take deliberate steps toward productivity and nation building.

Ipele-Owo attack: cleric allays Nigerians fear as worshippers desert churches on January 1

A cleric, Ven. Dr. Olatunde Abiodun, has urged Nigerians to remain calm and not be intimidated by recent attacks nor purported fearful actions around, including the Ipele-Owo incident, where gunmen attacked a police station on New Year's Eve causing the popular crossover night to be abruptly brought to an end in many churches within and around Owo, resulting in a great panic, fear and unimaginable tension in the ancient town and its environs.
