Reposition STEM Education through adequate funding, Dons tell FG

In a successive session, two Dons, Prof. Suleiman Sadiku and Dr. Kehinde Adenegan, have called on the Federal Government to reposition quality STEM education through adequate funding. STEM is an acronym of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The call was made at the virtual official opening ceremony of the 7th bi-annual conference of the School of Science, Federal College of Education, Okene held on Monday 22nd August, 2022. The four-day event which started with the opening ceremony, had Prof. Sadiku, a University Don from the Federal University of Technology, Minna as the lead paper Presenter.
Speaking on the conference theme, "Repositioning Quality STEM Education for National Growth and Development", Prof. Sadiku called for the Federal Government to improve education funding if the nation will witness tremendous industrial revolution. "If education is expensive, try ignorance. See a nation who invests in education, such nation's development is always remarkable", Sadiku noted.
Suleiman Sadiku, a Professor of Fisheries in the Department of Water resources, Aquaculture and Fisheries Technology, concluded his presentation by recommending reversal to STEM friendly educational system, encouragement of STEM students and teachers, building STEM infrastructure, and actions beyond sloganeering to reposition quality STEM education in Nigeria.
In the same vein, Dr. Kehinde Adenegan, a renown scholar from the Department of Mathematics, Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, who delivered the keynote address, also corroborated Prof. Sadiku's submission. Adenegan gave a pictorial analysis of budgetary allocations to education in Nigeria viz-a-viz the impending insecurity in the nation. "Our technology education seems incompetent or not strong enough to combat our insecurity in this nation such that schools enrolment in some parts of the nation is becoming dwindling consequent upon fear of attack and kidnapping which the security outfits are still unable to unravel despite the huge budgetary allocations", Adenegan lamented. "Don't use Professors to conduct elections alone, use their research outputs to govern the nation for industrial revolution, national development and consequently fund researches and education", Adenegan added.
"Until right pegs are put in the right holes, the nation's STEM education may not be better repositioned", Adenegan argued! The mathematician and IT expert urged government at all levels to embrace indigenous technology to reposition STEM education. Adenegan exemplified his position with the outstanding adventure of Mustapha Gajibo, a university "drop out" from Borno State who was able to locally manufacture an energy renewable bus. "This is a young guy from so called "troubled region" who developed his talent to come up with this great feat disregarding his challenges of inability to further his education. Unfortunately, only three comments were seen on the news post from fellow Nigerians! If it had been BB Naija posts, thousands, if not millions, of comments would have been triggered by the trending news. What a priority!", Adenegan retorted.
Meanwhile, in his welcome address, the Provost of the prestigious Federal College of Education, Okene, Dr. Umar Hassan, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Habiba Suleiman, charged participants at the conference to come up with meaningful deliberations to move the nation's education industry forward.
Similarly, the Dean of the School of Science, Mr. John Ayeni and the conference LOC Chairperson, Dr. Felicia Bobinihi welcomed the participants to the conference, which is dual mode in nature (virtual and physical), and urged participants to participate effectively and engage in meaningful academic discourse in the conference.
There was intensive intellectual discourse at various plenaries held during the conference, both at virtual platform (zoom) and physical sessions. Various sessions were chaired by the likes of Dr. Rufai Yakubu, the LOC secretary, Dr. Samuel Atiti, the Head of Mathematics Department, Dr. Thomas Osumah, among others. It was indeed an highly rewarding and remarkable conference whose communique has far-reaching decisions.
